Reckless Driving in Srinagar: Thar, Baleno Seized, Licenses to be Cancelled

Srinagar, 9 Jan: Yesterday a video of two vehicles driving recklessly through the streets of Srinagar went viral on social media, triggering public outrage and renewed demands for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.

The incident drew sharp criticism from citizens, who were reminded of the tragic Tengpora accident, which claimed innocent lives due to negligent driving.

Responding swiftly to the incident, SSP Traffic Srinagar confirmed that both vehicles were seized shortly after the video surfaced. “We acted immediately upon receiving the information. Both the vehicles Mahindra Thar and Maruti Baleno were seized, and under relevant sections, we have recommended the cancellation of their registration certificates (RC) and driving licenses,” said the SSP.

“Shockingly, it was revealed that these same vehicles and drivers had been involved in similar misconduct in November 2024. At that time, the drivers were counseled in the presence of their parents, but their repeated behavior underscores a troubling disregard for road safety. We repeatedly appeal parents and society to monitor their children’s driving habits and report any traffic misconduct, ti the Traffic police Srinagar.” The SSP added

The swift action by the traffic police has been widely applauded by the public. Many citizens credit the heightened vigilance of the authorities with bringing significant improvements to traffic discipline following the Tengpora tragedy. However, incidents like these serve as a stark reminder that a minority of irresponsible drivers remain a persistent threat on the roads.

Public sentiment remains firm that such offenders need to face stricter consequences to deter future violations. The incident has once again reignited discussions on the collective responsibility of parents, society, and authorities in ensuring road safety.
