Srinagar, Jan 16 : Amidst a continuous dry spell in the Kashmir valley, the residents of Lachmanpora area of Batamaloo here have prepared ‘Sas-Ras’, a traditional feast to seek divine intervention for improvement in the prevailing weather conditions.

It is believed that the Sas-Ras ritual is meant to invoke intercession with Almighty Allah to bring rainfall during the exceptionally dry days.

Local residents from Batamaloo area told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), in times of hardships and dry spell, the community has always found solace in the traditions. “Sas-Ras is not just a meal, it’s a symbol of our unity and determination to face challenges head-on,” they said.

Pertinently, the prolonged dry spell has led to the water scarcity challenges for the region.

“Sas-Ras, a feast made with simple yet wholesome ingredients, has become a staple during these times, bringing comfort and a sense of togetherness, and a belief to locals that Almighty Allah would listen to their pleas,” Bashir Ahmed, a local resident from Batmaloo, said.

“Our ancestors used to prepare Sas-Ras during similar dry spells. It’s heartening to see the tradition continue, reminding us of our roots and the strength we derive from our shared heritage,” he said.

Moreover, locals and neighbors alike in Batmaloo Srinagar have joined hands in sourcing ingredients, ensuring that every household and local in the area has access to the necessary components for preparing Sas-Ras—(KNO)
