Amid the ongoing talks of religious leaders and parties coming to the electoral fray, a renowned Kashmiri cleric is likely to contest assembly elections from Jammu Kashmir.

Sources told The Kashmiriyat that Molana Ghulam Rasool Hami who’s a renowned preacher from Srinagar will contest the assembly polls which are scheduled to start from 18th September.

Fifty-year-old Hami is a key spiritual figure from the Valley and has his followers spread across Jammu Kashmir.

The development comes amid another religious group Jammat Islami’s talks with the government to participate in the electoral process. Though Jammat Islami has not received any response on the ban imposed by the central government which they seek to remove, the party is keen to participate in the upcoming polls.

Several other religious, social figures from the Kashmir valley are said to be in dialogue with the various political parties in Kashmir and the government to express their willingness to participate in elections.

Source told The Kashmiriyat that Molana Ghulam Rasool Hami is considering contesting from Beerwah constituency of Budgam district. Also, in his consideration is the Shaltang seat of Srinagar district.

Hami’s participation in the elections will be an interesting development and has already created speculations about his possible influence in the Political battle for Kashmir’s assembly following a hiatus of ten years.

The Kashmiriyat tried to contact Molana Ghulam Rasool Hami who wasn’t available for any comments regarding this development.
