Ganderbal, Aug 19: The Department of Communication and Journalism (DCJ), School of Media Studies, Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) celebrated World Photography Day at Tulmulla campus here on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Dean Academic Affairs and Dean, School of Media Studies, Prof. Shahid Rasool, highlighted the relevance of observing World Photography Day and said “Photography is more than a technical endeavour-it is a language of truth. For our students and budding journalists, it is both a powerful tool of expression and a medium of professional growth.” Describing photography as a “creative art” Prof. Shahid, emphasized the role of photography in storytelling and capturing the imagination of people. “A single image often has the power to capture emotions, preserve history, and inspire change,” he said while referring to the photographs taken during the country’s independence movement.
He, however, cautioned the participants to fully respect and value the privacy and emotions of individuals while taking photographs. Prof. Shahid said, “Every photograph carries a story and a responsibility. Our aim is to guide young communicators to use their lens ethically and meaningfully.”
In his lecture and presentation on the theme titled “Film Your Film”, filmmaker, Mr. Gaurav Kumar,” discussed the significance of framing, lighting, editing, and sound in creating impactful cinema and advertisements. “Filmmaking is not just about shooting scenes, it’s about connecting with the audience through a narrative that is both compelling and engaging,” he added. He spoke about advertising techniques, the role of digital platforms, and how young creators can transform ideas into powerful screen experiences. He encouraged students to actively engage with both photography and filmmaking as complementary skills essential in today’s media landscape.
In his address to the participants, HoD, DCJ, Dr. Arif Nazir underscored the growing importance of visual media in contemporary society and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to promoting creativity, innovation, and professional excellence among its students.
Earlier, the programme coordinator, Sr Asst Prof. Dr. John Babu Koyye, said the World Photography Day is celebrated every year to honour the art, craft, science and history of photography.
Sr. Asst Profs Dr. Asif Khan and Dr. Nookaraju, Asst Prof. Dr. Akhter, research scholars and students were also present on the occasion. In the photography contest, “My Favorite Photo”, Danish Mohiuddin and Iqbal Feroz bagged the first and second prize respectively while the third prize was shared between Asif Bashir, Majid Hussain and Khalid Bhat.
