JAMMU, JANUARY 22: In consonance with the nationwide celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the National Song ‘Vande Mataram’, educational institutions across Jammu district organised a series of academic, cultural and awareness activities today. The programmes were part of a structured calendar being observed across districts of Jammu and Kashmir in the run-up to Republic Day, aimed at reinforcing national values, cultural heritage and civic consciousness among students.

Government Degree College (GDC) Marh organised debate and essay writing competitions focusing on the historical relevance and contemporary significance of Vande Mataram, besides screening a short film highlighting its inspirational role in India’s freedom struggle. The principal lauded the initiative, stating that such engagements help youth connect with the nation’s legacy and democratic ideals.

At GDC Paloura, a documentary screening was held to sensitise students about the role of Vande Mataram in mobilising masses during the freedom movement. Faculty members highlighted the literary and nationalist contributions of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and underscored the song’s enduring relevance in nation-building.

GDC Jourian conducted film screenings and earlier organised a patriotic rally wherein NSS volunteers carried placards and raised slogans promoting unity and national integration in surrounding areas. Similar documentary screenings were held at GDC Khour and Higher Secondary School Chakrohi, where students were acquainted with the song’s origin and its emotional resonance in India’s struggle for independence.

The School of Social Sciences, Cluster University of Jammu, marked the occasion with a slogan writing competition.

Several other schools, including GHSS Gharota and institutions in Zones Bhalwal, RS Pura and Satwari also participated enthusiastically through documentary screenings and allied activities, witnessing participation of hundreds of students and teaching staff.
