Sonamarg Development Authority Limits Snow Bikes to Protect Fragile Ecology
JK News Live

Ganderbal, Jan 22, KNT: In a significant step aimed at safeguarding the fragile environment of the world-famous health resort Sonamarg, the Sonamarg Development Authority has restricted the operation of snow mobile bikes to two designated locations, officials said on Thursday.

Chief Executive Officer of the Sonamarg Development Authority Bilal Mukhtar Bhat said that snowmobile bikes will now be permitted to operate only near the Environment Park and at Gadh Qal. As per the directive, a maximum of 20 snow mobile bikes will be allowed to operate daily at these approved sites.

The CEO made it clear that any snow mobile bike found operating at locations other than the two designated areas will invite strict legal action. In addition to legal proceedings, the snow mobile bikes involved in violations will be seized by the authorities.

He said the move has been taken to ensure environmental sustainability in Sonamarg, which witnesses heavy tourist footfall during the winter season. Unregulated movement of snow mobile bikes, he added, poses a serious threat to the region’s delicate ecosystem and natural landscape.

The Sonamarg Development Authority reiterated its commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the resort while allowing regulated tourism activities that do not harm the environment. Stakeholders, including snow mobile operators, have been directed to strictly comply with the new guidelines. [KNT]
