Once a Crucial Lifeline, Now Neglected: Ignored After Tunnel Opening, Kulan–Gagangir Road Turns Hazardous Amid Snow and Ice

Ganderbal, Jan 24, KNT: The road stretch connecting Zero Point Kulan to Gagangir in Ganderbal district, once considered a vital link before the opening of the tunnel, is now facing neglect, with snow and ice left uncleared, making the surface extremely slippery and unsafe for commuters.

Locals said that prior to the tunnel becoming operational, this stretch witnessed heavy traffic and received regular attention from the authorities, including timely snow clearance during winter. However, after traffic flow reduced following the tunnel opening, the road has allegedly been ignored despite continuing use by local inhabitants.

No attention was paid to clear the snow from this road. The slippery surface has made walking and driving risky, particularly during morning hours when the ice hardens further.

Inhabitants said that while the volume of traffic has declined, the road remains essential for people living in nearby villages. “Just because fewer vehicles pass through does not mean the road can be abandoned. We still depend on it for daily movement,” a local said.

Locals told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that vehicles skid even at low speeds and pedestrians struggle to maintain balance, raising fears of accidents. They said the condition of the road reflects a clear lack of attention since the tunnel diverted most through-traffic away from this route.

Locals have urged the administration to restore regular snow clearance and de-icing operations on the Kulan–Gagangir stretch, stressing that reduced traffic flow should not become a reason for overlooking the safety and needs of the local population. [KNT]
