Heavy snow expected in higher reaches, light to moderate snow in plains from late night of January 26: Sonam Lotus

Srinagar, Jan 25: There is good news for Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Republic Day celebrations, as the weather is expected to remain dry during the daytime on January 26, allowing smooth conduct of official and public events across the Union Territory.

Well-known weather observer Sonam Lotus said on Sunday that no rain or snowfall is expected during the daytime on Republic Day tomorrow.

However, he cautioned that weather conditions are likely to change from late night of January 26 till January 27.

He said higher reaches may receive heavy snowfall, while plains are likely to witness moderate snowfall during this period.

Sonam Lotus added that weather conditions are expected to improve from January 28 onwards.

There will be no snowfall or rainfall today and during the daytime on January 26.

From late night of January 26 till January 27, higher reaches may receive heavy snowfall, while plains could see moderate snowfall.

Weather is likely to improve from January 28,” Lotus told news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department (MeT), Srinagar, has also predicted a change in weather and issued a detailed forecast along with an advisory.

According to the MeT forecast: January 25: Light rain or snow at isolated places.

January 26–27: Generally cloudy till the evening of January 26, followed by light to moderate rain or snow at most places, with possibility of moderate to heavy rain or snow, thunder and gusty winds at a few places.

January 28: Light rain or snow at a few places. January 29–30: Partly cloudy. January 31–February 1: Partly cloudy with light rain or snow at isolated to scattered places. February 2–3: Partly cloudy.

Issuing an advisory, the MeT warned of moderate to heavy rain or snowfall, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds from late night January 26 to the evening of January 27.

Travelers and transporters have been advised to check road and highway conditions with traffic authorities before starting their journey. Farmers have been asked to suspend farm operations till January 28, while people living in snow-bound higher reaches have been advised to avoid travel to slippery and avalanche-prone areas.

The brief spell of fair weather till Republic Day daytime is expected to help in smooth celebrations, while authorities remain alert for possible snowfall soon after.(KINS)
