Mutton dealers question govt’s regulation of rates of local breeders

Srinagar, Jun 20 : The Mutton Dealers Association of Kashmir has raised concerns over the regulation of mutton prices by the local breeders in the Kashmir Valley during Eid-ul-Adha.

Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Mehraj ud Din, General Secretary of the Mutton Dealers Association, Kashmir, questioned the oversight and pricing policies enforced by the Department of Sheep Husbandry and the district administration.

“Why the Department of Sheep Husbandry failed to keep a check on the rates of local breeders,” he said, adding that the local breeders had no check on rates.

If the government had earlier set up units in different places of the valley, including Eidgah Srinagar, on the occasion of Eid ul Adha, why didn’t the local breeders sell livestock at regulated prices, he questioned.

About Srinagar’s Eidgah, he said there were instances at the time of Eid when mutton was being sold at highly varied prices. “We have personally seen the livestock, one sheep being sold at Rs 2 lakh, some at Rs 1.5 lakh, and some at Rs 3 lakh,” he said—(KNO)
