Jaipur: “Love is blind; it knows no boundaries,” is a phrase many of us have heard. Many have fallen in love, disregarding differences in age or religious backgrounds, and even married despite obstacles.
A similar story unfolded in the life of a young woman from Maharashtra, who, after falling in love with a Muslim gym trainer, converted to Islam and married him. However, now she is facing numerous problems.
This incident occurred in Madhya Pradesh. A woman named Pratima Nankur, a resident of Maharashtra, broke down in tears at the Jaipur Police Commissionerate. She had come to Jaipur in March 2020, just before the lockdown, to attend an event and got stuck there. She rented a flat and joined a gym, where she met gym trainer Arif Inayat, who eventually ensnared her in a romantic relationship.
Conversion for Love, But…
Driven by love, Pratima converted to Islam and married Arif. However, before the marriage, Arif was accused of forcing her into physical relations. They officially married on October 18, 2021. Arif pressured Pratima to convert, made her wear a burqa, and started teaching her to pray, but he never changed her name.
Pratima alleges that Arif attempted to sell off his family’s property in Mumbai at a low price, trying to cheat her out of the money. He then threatened her with divorce when she refused to hand over any funds.
Currently, Pratima is suffering from dengue, and her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter is also ill. However, Arif has not arranged any medical help or shown any support. Instead, Pratima claims that Arif has been regularly pressuring her for money. She also discovered that Arif was already married and had five children, which she had not known before the marriage.
Young Woman Files Complaint with the Police
The young woman contacted the local MLA of Hawa Mahal, Bal Mukundacharya, and shared her entire story. She alleged that Arif had deliberately married her, without changing her name as promised. Based on her complaint, she filed a report with Kunwar Rastadeep, the Additional Commissioner at the Jaipur Police Commissionerate.
Pratima further revealed that due to political pressure and the influence of powerful people, her husband had prevented her from filing a complaint at the Shastri Nagar Police Station. MLA Bal Mukundacharya commented, “Hindu women are being trapped in such love jihad schemes, leading many girls to become victims, and their situations end up becoming extremely tragic.”
Following this complaint, the police have taken Pratima’s statement seriously and have instructed to ensure her safety.
