Pulwama, Apr 3, KNT: The police in South Kashmir’s Tral have arrested two individuals who were allegedly posing as law enforcement officers to extort money from the general public. The arrests were made following a complaint lodged by one Muhammad Altaf Ganai, a resident of Nageenpora, Tral.

The accused have been identified as Bashir Jamal Sheikh from Saimooh, and Shafi Nabi Dar from Dadsara. According to officials, the duo was targeting unsuspecting citizens, falsely claiming police authority and demanding money under various pretexts.

Police sources revealed that several victims had come forward, reporting instances where they were coerced into paying sums of money under the fear of legal action.

Taking cognizance of the matter, Tral police registered an FIR under relevant legal provisions and swiftly apprehended the suspects.

Both individuals are currently in custody and face multiple charges related to impersonation, fraud, and extortion.

Meanwhile, police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities. “Legitimate officers never demand money from the public under any circumstances. If anyone encounters such fraudulent behavior, they should immediately inform the nearest police station or reach out through the official helpline,” a police spokesperson said. [KNT]
