Uri, Jan 28 (GNS): A 20 MVA transformer at the Lower Jhelum Hydroelectric Project in Challan Boniyar developed a technical fault late last night, disrupting power supply to large parts of Uri and Boniyar.
Officials informed GNS that the project has two 20 MVA transformers, of which one has become non-functional due to the fault. “As a result, electricity distribution to nearly 150 villages in the Uri and Boniyar areas has been affected, they said. “Authorities said repair work is underway and efforts are being made to restore normal supply at the earliest.”
Meanwhile, MLA Uri Dr Sajjad Shafi has taken up the issue of inadequate transformer capacity at the Lower Jhelum Hydroelectric Project with the Managing Director of JKSPDC. He sought urgent intervention to address the recurring power problems faced by residents of the Uri constituency.
Dr Shafi said that low capacity transformers at LJHP, combined with technical failures, have led to frequent power disruptions across the constituency, particularly during peak winter months. He stressed the need to upgrade and strengthen the transformer capacity to around 70 MVA to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply to the area. (GNS)
