Says Islamic calendar depends on moon sighting; difficult to say whether Eid-ul-Fitr will fall on Mar 20 or 21, therefore Jumat-ul-Vida to be observed tomorrow
Srinagar, Mar 12: The last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, Jumat-ul-Vida, will be observed tomorrow across Jammu and Kashmir, Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi said on Thursday.
The Grand Mufti told The Kashmir Honour News (TKHN) that the Islamic calendar is based on the sighting of the moon, making it difficult to confirm at this stage whether Eid-ul-Fitr will fall on Friday, March 20, or Saturday, March 21.
He said that after considering the lunar calendar and in consultation with other scholars, it has been decided that Jumat-ul-Vida will be observed tomorrow.
However, he added that if the crescent moon of Shawwal is not sighted and Eid-ul-Fitr is not announced on Friday, March 20, then that day will also be observed as Jumat-ul-Vida.
Jumat-ul-Vida, the last Friday of Ramadan, holds special significance for Muslims, with devotees offering congregational prayers and special supplications in mosques during the final days of the holy month. (TKHN)
