Kulgam, April 7: The Road Safety Club of Government Degree College (GDC) Kulgam today organised a Mega Road Safety Awareness Event in collaboration with the Transport Department, Kulgam, with the objective of spreading awareness regarding safe road practices among students and the general public.
The programme was conducted in two sessions and witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, NCC and NSS volunteers, non-teaching staff, and students from different departments.
The first session, held in the college conference hall, commenced with the playing of the National Anthem, followed by an introductory address by Prof. (Dr.) Mohd Abass Shah, Principal, GDC Kulgam, highlighting the significance of road safety and the need for responsible road behaviour. The session was moderated by Dr. Rayees Ahmad, Assistant Professor, GDC Kulgam.
The resource person, Dr. Showkat Ahmad, ARTO Kulgam, delivered an insightful awareness lecture on traffic discipline, responsible driving, the use of helmets and seatbelts, and the importance of safeguarding precious human life on roads. Road safety awareness videos were also screened during the session, which greatly enhanced students’ understanding of traffic rules and accident prevention measures.
During the event, students who secured first positions in various inter-college competitions of the Road Safety Awareness Programme were felicitated. The session concluded with closing remarks and a formal vote of thanks presented by Dr. Rasikh Barkat, Assistant Professor, GDC Kulgam.
The second session was held at the college ground, where Mr. Shahzad Alam (IAS), District Development Commissioner, Kulgam, graced the occasion, shared words of wisdom with the participants, and participated in the Road Safety Pledge. The pledge was read out by Mr. Shahnawaz Ahmad, Assistant Professor, GDC Kulgam. The session was hosted by Mr. Sikandar Yaqoob, PTI, GDC Kulgam. Mr. Shahzad Alam (IAS) also flagged off a road safety rally from the college campus to the SP Office, Kulgam.
During the rally, students carried banners, placards, helmets, and awareness pamphlets to disseminate the message of road safety among the public. Helmets were distributed free of cost to riders found without protective gear, and they were sensitized about the importance of wearing helmets. Additionally, road safety pamphlets were distributed among the general public to enhance awareness.
Speaking on the occasion, the speakers emphasised that adherence to traffic rules, use of helmets and seatbelts, avoidance of rash driving, and respect for pedestrians are essential to minimise road accidents and save lives.
The programme concluded with the successful culmination of the rally and a renewed commitment from students and staff to act as ambassadors of road safety in society.
The event was organised under the supervision of the worthy Principal, GDC Kulgam, and coordinated by the Road Safety Club with the active support of faculty members and volunteers.
