When Religion Becomes a Battlefield on Social Media

Social media today has become one of the most powerful platforms shaping discussions within society. While it has the ability to spread knowledge, awareness, and positivity, it is increasingly being used to spread hostility, division, and unnecessary confrontation within the Muslim Ummah.
It has now become a routine on social media to witness scholar-versus-scholar content, “strong replies,” and endless videos or posts attacking opposing views. Instead of encouraging wisdom, understanding, and respectful dialogue, such content often turns religious discussions into public confrontations driven by ego, mockery, and hostility.
Every day, Muslims are seen attacking fellow Muslims on social media, questioning each other’s faith, and speaking as though Paradise and Hell are in human hands. In this growing atmosphere of hatred and division, the spirit of brotherhood, compassion, and mutual respect is slowly fading away.
Islam, however, teaches a completely different path. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) did not guide people through insults, humiliation, or abusive language. He transformed hearts through mercy, patience, wisdom, humility, and noble character. Even while correcting others, he maintained dignity and compassion. His life remains a timeless reminder that guidance is spread through character and sincerity, not through hatred and arrogance.
Unfortunately, many people today focus more on exposing the faults of others than correcting themselves. Religious discussions have increasingly become competitions of ego rather than sincere efforts for reform and understanding. Calling someone towards goodness should always be done with wisdom, humility, and respect, because ultimate guidance belongs to Allah alone.
Our responsibility is to improve ourselves and encourage others towards goodness with kindness and sincerity. Whether someone accepts that advice or not is between them and Allah. It is not for us to abuse people, force them, or lower ourselves to behaviour that itself goes against the teachings of Islam.
No human being has been given the authority to decide who will enter Paradise and who will be condemned. Such judgments belong solely to Allah. The responsibility of a believer is to spread goodness, maintain good character, and contribute towards unity within the Ummah.
Islam does not even permit insulting people of other religions, yet today Muslims themselves are increasingly engaged in insulting and humiliating one another. This is far removed from the spirit of Islam, which teaches mercy, dignity, and respect in dealing with all people.
It is equally important to understand that not every scholar or religious speaker promotes hatred and division. Many continue to guide people towards peace, wisdom, understanding, and unity. However, certain voices fuel unnecessary hostility and sectarianism, and society must avoid becoming influenced by narratives rooted in hatred and conflict.
The Muslim Ummah was never meant to be weakened by internal hostility. Differences may exist, but they should never destroy humanity, dignity, and mutual respect. Communities rise through compassion, understanding, wisdom, and strong moral character — not through insults and division.
May Allah guide us all, unite our hearts, protect us from arrogance, hatred, and division, and grant us the ability not only to speak about the Qur’an and Sunnah, but to truly implement them in our lives with sincerity, wisdom, and good character. Aameen
