Nicole Kidman understood the assignment and went for extra credit with her Met Gala look.
The “Big Little Lies” actress appropriately interpreted the “in honor of Karl” theme. She hit the red carpet, with husband Keith Urban by her side, wearing an archival Chanel Haute Couture gown from 2004. Nearly two decades later, Kidman still looked ethereal in the pale pink dress embellished with sequins and feathers as a sheer train gracefully trailed behind her.
She wore her hair down with a black bow, and completed the look with black heels.
Kidman stopped to chat with La La Anthony for Vogue on the red carpet about the angelic look designed by late designer Karl Lagerfeld, revealing that she first wore the dress for the Chanel No. 5 perfume commercial.
“This dress was worn in the Chanel No. 5 commercial that Baz Luhrmann and I did with Karl, who concocted this out of his head,” she said. “I have the sketches when he was drawing it.”
She remembers fitting the dress “repeatedly” with the late designer.
“I think my deep deep sort of love of Karl came through this time together because I knew him very, very well. And so, to be able to honor him and to wear this dress now for Chanel and show I suppose the way these couture gowns last,” Kidman said.
Kidman added that celebrating fashion as an art form is what she loves, and recalled working with Lagerfeld.
“He’d make me laugh, he was so funny,” she said
