Ganderbal 23 May 2024: Today (24-05-24) , on World Schizophrenia Day, District Mental Health, Ganderbal did an awareness programme with 34 Assam Rifles ,Wussan .
Dr. Umar Jan ( Psychiatrist – DMHP) gave a PowerPoint presentation to Army officers / soldiers about the Schizophrenia and other mental health disorders.
He said Schizophrenia occupies a large space in public consciousness, disproportionate to its prevalence. It is the 4th most common mental disorder after Depression, Anxiety and Bipolar Disorder. The salience however is well deserved because the untreated illness leaves more functional deficits in inter-personal and occupational areas than other mental illnesses. Males are more affected than females , they get it in their early twenties.
The hall full of soldiers got a first hand experience about the hidden symptoms of psychiatric disorders. After the programme there was a OPD/ counseling session with follow ups and new ones who go through different symptoms associated with mental health problems
