Srinagar, Aug 11: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed “exemplary punishment” for those selling or storing unsafe food, calling it a grave threat to public health. Chairing a high-level meeting, he ordered criminal proceedings against serious violators under the Food Safety & Standards Act and announced intensified inspections across all districts, personally led by Deputy Commissioners.

Key measures include:

Food testing labs at every district HQ and entry-point check posts at Lakhanpur & Qazigund.

Strengthening the Food Safety and Drugs Organization.

Registration and licensing of all food distributors and vendors.

Surprise raids with police assistance and mobile food-testing vans.

Verification of meat sources, cold chain maintenance, and a ban on harmful chemicals or additives.

The CM warned against vigilante action, urging citizens to report violations via “Dial 104.” He said the drive will continue until the sale of unhygienic meat and food items is fully curbed.
