JMC deploys SHG Community Mobilizers to strengthen sanitation, waste management across Jammu
JK News Live

JAMMU, MARCH 24: In a significant step towards strengthening sanitation and urban cleanliness systems, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) deployed Community Mobilizers drawn from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across all wards of the city.

The Community Mobilizers will play a pivotal role in enhancing public participation and awareness through extensive door-to-door IEC (Information, Education and Communication) activities. Their key responsibilities include visiting households, promoting waste segregation at source and motivating residents to adopt sustainable sanitation practices.

The mobilizers will actively identify and report issues related to Solid Waste Management, including illegal dumping of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste, Garbage Vulnerable Points, hotspots, littering, Open Defecation (OD) sites, designated ‘Yellow’ and ‘Red’ spots and polluted water bodies. They will also coordinate closely with JMC sanitation staff to ensure timely redressal of sanitation related issues.

As part of their outreach, Community Mobilizers will regularly visit community and public toilets, bulk waste generators, religious places and major transit locations such as airports, bus stands and railway stations. Their efforts will focus on addressing public grievances, monitoring sanitation standards, promoting RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) practices and supporting the successful implementation of Swachh Survekshan initiatives.

A special emphasis is being placed on maintaining cleanliness in and around water bodies and ponds. The mobilizers, along with the IEC team, are educating residents about the importance of preserving these resources and adopting responsible waste disposal practices. Citizens are being urged to dispose of their household waste, including religious waste, only through designated door-to-door collection vehicles and refrain from dumping waste into water bodies. Special awareness camp was organised at Lower Muthi Waterbody where people were educated regarding no throwing of waste into water bodies.

Speaking on the initiative, Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation Dr. Devansh Yadav stated, “The engagement of Community Mobilizers from Self-Help Groups marks an important step towards strengthening community-driven sanitation efforts in Jammu city. Their active involvement at the grassroots level will not only improve waste management practices but also ensure sustained behavioral change among citizens. JMC urges all residents to cooperate with the mobilizers and adopt waste segregation at source, which is essential for making Jammu cleaner, healthier and environmentally sustainable.”

Acting under the directions of the Commissioner JMC, various officials of the corporation actively participated in the awareness campaign, reaffirming JMC’s commitment to making Jammu a cleaner and more sustainable city.
