Jammu, Mar 30 (KNO): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said the government does not reject private members’ bills without due scrutiny, asserting that each proposal is examined on merit before a decision is taken.
Responding to concerns raised by Congress legislator Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, CM Omar, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said it was “unfair” to suggest that such bills are opposed routinely without application of mind.
Bhat, who represents Bandipora Assembly segment, had submitted a private member bill seeking equitable employment opportunities in civil services.
“It may appear as if we simply rise to oppose a bill, but that is not the case,” Omar said, adding that all proposals reaching the government are studied in detail, including their feasibility, advantages and drawbacks.
He said the government supports proposals where benefits outweigh concerns, but noted that Congress legislator’s bill, after examination, presented more challenges than advantages.
Acknowledging the concern raised by the legislator, the chief minister said the issue of employment equity requires attention, but maintained that the current bill was not a workable solution.
The CM said restricting recruitment or postings to the local level could create administrative complications.
He assured the House that the government would explore alternative measures to address the issue raised by the legislator.
