Sopore, Jul 29 Amid the procession taken to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the Shia mourners in north Kashmir’s Sopore strongly protested against the recent Qur’an burning incident in Sweden.

Hundreds of people in the procession at Saidpura area of Sopore took along with them copies of the Qur’an to express their love for the holy book and send out a strong message to the “enemies of Islam”.

Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Er Fida Hussain, who was at Saidpura to participate in the Muharram procession on the occasion of ‘Youm-e-Ashura’, condemned the blasphemous act of burning the Qur’an in Sweden.

“Burning of Qur’an is condemnable and Muslims should raise their voices against the act,” Er Hussain said. “We should come to the forefront to show our love and support for the Qur’an.”

Another mourner said the act is condemnable. “We must respect every religious book.”

In 2023, a number of incidents of Qur’an burning occurred in Sweden, the most notable of which occurred on 28 June 2023, when a 37-year-old Iraqi refugee ripped out and set fire to pages of the Qur’an outside the Stockholm Mosque—
